EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Rika

Chandrika Darbari a.k.a. Rika is not your average everyday pop singer. Of multicultural Indian and Serbian heritage, she is also every inch a modern young Londoner. Confident and determined, she boldly fuses her personal history with the thoughts and concerns of world events happening around us to produce powerful narratives on love, life and meaning in the world.

She has recently released her brand new single ‘The Others’ and here we speak exclusively to Rika about her new music, musical inspirations, touring plans, and much more;

Growing up who inspired your love of music?

Definitely Mariah Carey, and Bruno Mars. They are strong voices which are so recognisable and powerful, and everything I want to achieve as a singer. They are both such strong song writers as well, which is equally as important. I used to also listen a lot to The Carpenters and ABBA when I was really young, they’re my parent’s favourites!

What is your earliest music memory?

Probably writing a song for my dad when I was 9 years old. He wasn’t at home for the holidays and I wrote him a song called “The love of Xmas” to the tune of “All I want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey haha.

Who are your musical heroes?

Probably the greats like Micheal Jackson, Prince, Mariah, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. That era of music was so strong and powerful to me, and they are some of the best all time vocalists and performers to date.

What would be your dream collaboration?

It sounds really cliché but Justin Bieber. I love to clarity of his voice soo much! It sounds crystal clear and I feel our voice would blend well together.

What is the inspiration behind your new single ‘The Others’?

The single is about that special someone and how they’re “nothing like the others”. I personally don’t have a special someone in my life haha. I co-wrote the song with Karen Harding, who had the UK top ten hit in 2015 called “Say Something” and my producer David King and it was a blast! They probably have a better experience in this field than me haha.

How would you describe your sound in 3 words?

Soulful, bright and melismatic.

Can we expect an album from you soon?

I’m releasing a longer project before summer comes so keep your eyes peeled ;).

Do you have any touring plans lined up?

I’m hoping to do some festivals this year!

What do you hope to achieve over the course of your career?

Worldwide success of course, but most importantly for people to connect with my music and feel something when they listen. To understand what I feel in my music and feel the same too.
