AMWIN is an exciting Swedish alt-pop talent who has been turning heads with her edgy sound – an eclectic mix of pop, electronic, and hip-hop. This April she will release her much anticipated debut EP via UMG Sweden / Island UK / Dew Process and 2019 is set to be a huge breakout year for the rising star.
Here we chat exclusively to AMWIN to discuss her time on Swedish Idol, writing process and debut record:
What has been the biggest learning curve since your time on Swedish Idol?
Literally everything. The only experience I had when it came to music before I was on Idol was the many hours I spent in front of my mirror in my room. These past three years have been a very intense way of learning about the music industry, as well as getting to know myself as an artist. But “intense” is just how I wanted my life and this journey to be. I’m like that, impatient and eager.
Of course, since your time on the show you have been building a strong fanbase across the globe, do you have a message for your supporters?
I’m not interested in others’ opinions about me. We are often so eager to put each other into boxes and feed into an external narrative. All I want is for us to breakout of our designated boxes and be completely free to express ourselves and be the people we want to be, not what others expect us to be. It feels important for me to let all sides of myself and my emotions have a platform, even the emotions and thoughts that can sometimes be uncomfortable. Daring to show your imperfections is a sign of strength. Being an empowered and independent woman doesn’t mean that you can’t be vulnerable and fragile, it means the opposite.
Your debut EP is due later this year, what was the writing process like for this project?
There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I guess that’s a part of it. I’m constantly going between being super inspired and excited to write, to being frustrated and sometimes even scared. Writing music is the most intimidating thing I’ve ever done. I don’t mind performing for 10,000 people, but having to face myself while writing can be a lot. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t limit my feelings or emotions in the studio, and I have a lot of fun pushing the boundaries of what’s OK and what’s not. This also includes not sticking to one genre or sound and creating music that I genuinely just f*ck with, regardless of whether it’s punk, country or just happy vibes pop.
Sonically what can listeners expect from the EP?
Dope music. Working against the conceptions of a genre.
Do you have a particular song on the record that you’re most excited to share?
Dua Lipa. Writing this one is the most fun I’ve ever had writing music. Everyone in the studio was really drunk and this was like the 3rd song we made that day. I wanted to make a song that’s just about straight up being in love with someone. No compromising. No playing it cool. Just straight “I love you, I love you, I love you. Please don’t break my fragile heart”.
While working on the project what would you say was the biggest challenge you faced?
Myself. I think it’s so easy to be really hard on yourself and set limits on what you’re capable of. But I am capable, and I’ve really just been focusing on allowing myself to be experimental and playful with this.
What are you hoping the fans take from the record?
Emotions. I don’t really care what type of emotions, I just want people to feel.
Looking ahead what else can we expect from you this year?
Definitely more music, I have this big stash of songs now that I love in different ways. But most importantly, live performances. The most important part of being an artist to me is connecting with my listeners, and it’s while performing live that I really feel like I come alive. So going on tour and sharing those moments of energy is my number one priority after the EP is out. I really look forward to dancing with my dope followers!
