EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Great Good Fine Ok

Great Good Fine Ok are an exciting Brooklyn-based synth-pop duo consisting of Luke and Jon  who have recently won a legion of new fans thanks to their brilliant single ‘Touch’ which is the second track to be lifted off their upcoming EP which will be released via Ultra Records very soon.

Here we speak exclusively to Jon of Great Good Fine Ok to discuss their band name, new music, future plans and more:

Can you tell us a little about how Great Good Fine Ok came about?

Luke and I met and became friends about 6 years ago when he was living around the corner from me in BK with my close friend and piano player. About 5 years ago we ran into each other on the street after not seeing each other for months and decided to write a song together. That night “You’re the One for Me” was created. We put a band together, started writing more songs and GGFO was born.

How did you come up with the band name?

I (Jon) came up with the name years before GGFO started and kept it in my mind as a “good band name”. No idea how I thought of it. When it came time for Luke and I to name this project, I suggested Great Good Fine Ok, and it stuck.

Has being in a band always been your ambition?

At about 9 years old I started taking guitar lessons and writing songs. I realized at about 12 that I loved performing and would make music my life. Luke also started extremely young, writing and producing music. I’ve always wanted to write and perform forever, but it wasn’t until I started a band in college called Luke Warm that I knew that I wanted to be part of a full band and collaborate with other artists.

    Who are your musical heroes?

Wow, there are so many, but to name a few: MJ, Whitney, Prince, Elton, Freddie.

How would you describe your musical style to new listeners?

We usually say something like indie-pop or synth-pop/R&b. This is always a tough question because our music is definitely a fusion of different genres.

You have just released the video for Touch, can you talk us through the videos treatment?

It’s pretty crazy. We got together with creative director/animator Sam Mason and came up with this super ambitious concept involving space travel and aliens. Simultaneously, an amazing production company in Atlanta called RiTE Media Group who are fans of the band expressed interest in working with us on something. We decided to join forces and everything fell into place. It was a 5 day shoot with a huge crew and several different locations. A huge undertaking and complete labor of love for everyone involved. The music video for “Touch” is the second part and continuation of a concept started with the video for “Change”. The underlying theme is that you cannot escape your destiny. Traveling to a distant planet through a loophole only brought the boy closer to reuniting with his true love.

What is the inspiration behind the track?

Touch is about that phase in a relationship when all you want to do is touch the other person. You can’t get enough. But at the same time, when you are apart, you find yourself obsessing and thinking way too much. You are simultaneously enamoured and tortured.

You have a new EP coming soon, what can fans expect from record?

We really tried to push the limits of what we are capable of on this one. We wanted to expand the GGFO spectrum musically and lyrically. It’s more personal and organic than we’ve ever been.

Are you planning on touring your new music?

    Absolutely!

What are your long term career plans?

We are going to continue to make music and tour and create content and experiences that we are proud of. We want to continue to reciprocate the amazing love that our fans show have shown us since the beginning.
