Fast rising Scottish teenager Gus Harrower is a multi talented singer/songwriter who has recently released his brand new single ‘Wonder’.
Here we speak exclusively to Gus Harrower to discuss his latest release, musical influences, career goals, and more:
Growing up who inspired your love of music?
My dad got me into learning the piano from an early age and my parents have
always surrounded me with their musical taste so I guess they were the
catalyst for my love of music. I also had a lot of musical friends when I was
younger so growing up, there was always a fusion of songs on at parties and
gigs.
Who are your musical influences?
My biggest musical influence is Justin Vernon, better known as Bon Iver. There
isn’t one of his songs that I dislike and I find his songwriting so raw and honest.
Their most recent album ’22 A Million’ is my favourite album ever.
How would you describe your own sound to new listeners?
This is always the hardest question for artists! I would like to think my music is
easy-listening and pop-y. I think a lot about melodies and chorus’ so hopefully
it’s catchy enough for people to remember too.
What is the inspiration behind your new single ‘Wonder’?
I wrote Wonder after seeing how invested people become in the mundane
minutiae of the lives of celebrities. It bewilders me how we get so dragged in
to stories of relationships, pregnancies and those of general gossip rather
than focusing on the bigger matters around the world.
What do you hope fans take from the track?
If anything, I’d like people to think about how invested they are in social media
and how important it really is to living a fulfilled life. I started to think about how
much time I spend on my phone and how often real, human interaction takes
place. If folk maybe spare a second thought about this then the message is
being conveyed.
Do you have any plans to release an album this year?
I would love to release an album, I have plans for single releases but an album
is definitely on the horizon. I just need to be confident of a track list and find
the ideal place to record it.
Do you have any touring plans lined up?
Nothing planned as of yet but hopefully after Summer I can book some gigs
down south as it’s something I’m needing to do. I was fortunate enough to go
on a Scottish tour back in February with an amazing duo band called Upstairs
Open. I got on the bill very last minute however it was an experience I’d love to
do again soon!
When writing new material where do you look to mainly for your inspiration?
I tend not to go out looking for inspiration because I feel that can force my
songwriting which often results in frustration and bad songs essentially.
Usually I’ll hear a tune in my head when I’m playing the piano or guitar and
that’ll be the foundations for new material. It’s always spontaneous which is
nice.
What are you long term career goals?
I’ve got lots of goals and dreams that I hope to achieve one day however long
term I hope to play shows all over the world. Crowd size doesn’t bother me but
as long as there is love and respect for my music, then I’ll be happy!
