EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Kayley Hill

Kayley Hill is an exciting country music singer hailing from Nashville whose musical influences include the likes of Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss and Jason Mraz to name a few. Her brand new single ‘You’re Her Man’ will be released this Friday (April 20th) and is expected to be a big hit on the Country charts.

Here we speak exclusively to Kayley Hill about her new single, touring plans, and much, much more;

Growing up who inspired your love of country music?

My dad used to play Brooks and Dunn all the time. I remember dancing around my living room to “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” as a child and driving to soccer practice, windows rolled down to the sweet sounds of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I was raised in Bristol, TN, the renowned birthplace of country music…Living in Bristol and having country/southern rock/bluegrass loving parents was probably how I found myself nestled in this genre. It runs deep in my culture.

As a child was music always the path you felt destined to follow?

Following the path of music was never a choice for me. I have always felt as though it were written on my DNA as a predestined calling. Even as a small child at 3 or 4 years old, I just knew it would be my life.

At what age did you start pursuing music as a career?

In middle school I started performing for the community and later began competing. It only seemed right to continue my performance education in college. I attended The Boston Conservatory for musical theatre and directly after graduation, booked my first “real” gig singing on a cruise ship.

Your new single ‘You’re Her Man’ is out April 20th, how excited are you about sharing new music?

I’m so ready to share more and more new music. It’s so wild to me that a year has almost come and went since my last release. (separate from my Christmas single) I think there’s a new revolution in the music industry regarding how often us artists release content and how much to put out there. I’ve been really thoughtful about my approach, specifically with “You’re Her Man” and not only do I believe wholeheartedly in the song, but it’s the perfect time as well.

What was the main inspiration behind the single?

I feel as though my best work is honest work, and though this song is fictional, the idea came from an honest relationship from my past. It’s the classic “what if” moment. What would you say to someone you had a history with, who you haven’t seen in years, who is now happily married?

Does the sound of the track reflect the style of music you will be releasing over the next year?

Yes and no. I truly believe my following releases may have more earth to them, reminiscent of Patty Griffin, Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile and some may have a throwback feel to them. I love writing 50s inspired songs and making them modern. My song “Firecracker” is a great example of that.

What do you hope listeners take from your music?

Joy firstly, even though that’s something they would primarily get from a live show. I think the joy I have on stage permeates. (at least I hope it does) Apart from joy, I guess I just desire for my music to allow people to reminisce, dance, and heal.

So, can we expect to see you touring soon?

I’m doing a mini tour in May up towards Iowa and Wisconsin. Hopefully, there will be more touring towards the end of the year. Fingers crossed!

Do you have any plans to release an album this year?

Currently I’m focused on releasing singles throughout the year and then compiling them into an EP that I’ll distribute physical copies of in addition to iTunes, Spotify etc. I want my listeners and fans to have as little down time between songs as possible. It’s so hard waiting for the next album to drop or next hit, so I’ve chosen to approach this industry a little differently. “Give ‘em what they want!”

What are your main career goals?

I’d die if I could sing on stage with Dolly Parton someday. I’d also love to play the Ryman and headline on notable stages across the nation and eventually Europe. I don’t plan on quitting this hustle anytime soon, so I’d like my music career to be a long and fruitful one.
