Rising star Fred Roberts looks for release from a tricky relationship on captivating new single ‘Say’.
For fans of Ruel, Olivia Rodrigo and Troye Sivan, the 20-year-old is not to miss with his fledgling brand of endearing pop.
On ‘Say’, Fred pleads with an ex-beau to ‘say I wasn’t just a waste’ as he laments spending his youth on a relationship that hit the rocks.
A confident offering, which lands with a cinematic music video, the singer’s sophomore single marks him out as one to watch.
Speaking to Gay Times about his songwriting process earlier this year, Fred said: “I consider my music quite retrospective. The way I started writing, and I still do, is by looking at my past and unpicking it and telling the stories of that time.
“I think it’s important I’ve got sad songs that are going to break your heart because that’s how they connect. Even with these sad songs, there’s an importance of seeing myself in a good place.”
‘Say’ follows April’s hit ‘Runaway’ which saw love from BBC Radio 1 and has racked up hundreds of thousands of streams online.
The star will take his original material and more to the live stage at The Social in London on Thursday, September 14 – tickets available here.
Fred famously appeared on The X Factor: The Band in 2019 and has spent time since then cultivating his own sound ever since.
Celebrating the release of ‘SAY’ on Instagram, Fred wrote: “When I was younger, all I wanted was to mean something to someone. The first time I felt desired by a boy I clung onto that feeling, scared to let go as I thought it would never happen again.
“This is me looking back at the choice between chasing a reckless desire and what I knew was healthy.”
