Hari Nef was recently featured on the cover of Elle Magazine (the upcoming September 2016 issue). It marks the first time a “transgender woman has been on the cover of a major commercial British magazine”.
Apart from her lavishing beauty, Nef has made it clear she does not appreciate the belittlings and scrutiny of transgender individuals. In an Elle interview, she stated that the issue at hand goes much deeper than expected.
There’s a violent and blatant discrepancy between the way white trans women and trans women of colour are treated in the United States.
Also featured in a Ted Talk conference back in 2015, she informs people of the danger trans individuals face despite an increase in tolerance by some of the worldwide population. Nef also highlights the representation and aesthetic of women.
It’s time for the aesthetics of upwardly mobile feminist respectability to make room for the aesthetics of survival, particularly trans survival.
