Julia Michaels is no stranger to the music industry. From songwriting credits on Selena Gomez’s Revival album to Justin Bieber’s Purpose, this 23-year-old lyricist has written some of the biggest hits to date and is about to have one of her very own.
On Friday, Michaels unveiled the artwork for her debut single “Issues,” along with a snippet of the song. “I’m so thrilled to announce that my first single ‘Issues’ is coming out next Friday January 13!!!,” she wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait for you all to hear it.”

Republic Group President Charlie Walk praised Michaels after she signed a deal with the record label back in October to pursue her solo endeavors.
“From the first day I met Julia it was clear that she was not just a writer, but a very unique artist,” Walk said. “Her trademark vocals, writing prowess and musical vision puts her in a category all her own. We’re thrilled to be a part of her upcoming journey and to share her art with the world.”
Michaels’ talents as a songwriter are evident. The Iowa native has written for world known names such as Kelly Clarkson, Rita Ora, Hailee Steinfeld, Fifth Harmony and Nick Jonas. She also co-wrote twelve tracks on Gwen’s Stefani’s latest album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like and contributed to Britney Spears’ Glory.
When it came to “Issues,” the rising star simply couldn’t find it in her to part ways with the song. Michaels and writing partner, Justin Tranter, first began the crafting process at a songwriting camp.
“I thought, ‘This song is too much my story to give to someone else’,” Michaels told Billboard. “Maybe this is a sign. Maybe I want something different.”
In preparation for her own debut, the acclaimed songwriter tested the waters. Michaels was featured on Kygo’s single, “Carry Me.” The duo shared the stage at the 2016 Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Rio. You can watch their performance below.
