- At the heart of this cinematic triumph is Cantrell, delivering a power-packed performance that has critics singing her praises. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Florence Hugh and Mia Goth, Cantrell infuses Abigail with a myriad of nuances, capturing the twisted nature of her character. From moments of charm and precociousness to sudden bursts of deadly intensity, Cantrell breathes life into Abigail, making her a captivating and enigmatic presence on screen.
- As indie films make a compelling resurgence, Cantrell emerges as a refreshing new star, bringing depth and authenticity to her roles. In a candid conversation, the actress, with over a decade of industry experience, reflects on her diverse journey— from portraying a spoiled bratty diva on Nickelodeon’s “Haunted Hathaways” to sharing the screen with Jason Alexander in “Young Sheldon” and embodying the human version of a monster in Warner Bros’ chilling “Lights Out.” Abigail marks a new pinnacle in Cantrell’s career, showcasing her versatility and undeniable talent in a genre-defying narrative.
Here’s what we asked-
Ava, you’ve been at this for a long time. How do you feel about playing title role in this 70s thriller Abigail?
I feel so blessed to have got the opportunity to play the lead role in Abigail. She was such a thrill to dive into. I really felt ready for the challenge of being the lead and molding this complicated, unempathetic character into someone the audience would enjoy watching on screen the entire movie.
How do you think viewers will relate to or be affected by your character in Abigail?
What I find fascinating is the reaction to my character varies. The female audience I think really loves to see me take charge and kick the bully’s butt. There was a remark on the trailer stating “I don’t want to watch a girl play Rambo” so, some people have had strong reactions not wanting me to be too tough. I happen to love strong women leads. That being said, Abigail makes all the wrong decisions but each decision she makes confidently and without remorse. There is an antihero feeling that you root for my character and her love interest Lucas.
Slasher films often have dedicated fanbases. How do you think this movie will connect with both fans of the genre and those who might be new to it?
Abigail has several great twists that those new to the genre will be blown away by. It’s a great movie to get introduced to slashers with.
Abigail has a good amount of drama, a bit of humor and quirk, and a roller coaster of “oh wow, I didn’t see that coming” moments.
What are your thoughts about this movie being labeled “an introduction to horror”
I love that. I played the human version of the creature Diana in Lights Out and that was also labeled as a good first horror movie for people to see. I was 16 when Lights Out came out and it was my first horror. At the premiere I kept screaming the loudest at Diana, which is actually a bit embarrassing, but I couldn’t help myself from being terrified.
What is store for you moving ahead?
A zombie apocalypse movie where I play the lead character. Can’t believe my good fortune to do this again. I have been training in Muay Thai for over a year and even competed in a fight. I am ready to take on Zombies and kick even more butt. My character is the opposite of Abigail though, as she will be a force of good in a world gone mad. Its going to be amazing to jump into a new character again real soon.
