Here at CelebMix, we love introducing our readers to new, upcoming talent. In this article, we introduce you to Josh McGovern, a talented singer and song-writer from Brighton.
He has recently released his first single of 2018, titled ‘Weight.’ In an extremely poignant way, the track addresses the topic of mental health, with the single being described as ‘a haunting piece of dark alt-folk.’
‘Weight’ showcases Josh’s phenomenal vocals, coupled with stunning background vocals, also accompanied with string and brass sections.
Speaking about his new single, Josh says:
”Weight is the most black and white thing I’ve ever written. It’s a stark survey of the end of love and my mental health – the bits no one wants to talk about. I’m not the best at talking about that stuff, but so many people struggle with the same situations. I think it’s important to have songs that people can relate to. I wouldn’t be half of who I am without the beautiful music of my peers.’
The track follows on from the release of his debut single ‘The Devil Below Me’ in 2017, which was followed up by next single ‘Love Left Lost.’
In addition to the release of the single, he has also released the music video for ‘Weight.’ The music video follows the life of a man who is a widower and watches the daily struggles that he faces as he finds himself dealing with the lasting memories of his wife. When speaking about the music video, Josh says that while the track ‘deals with some heavy stuff,’ he ‘wanted to create a video that expressed the same feelings the song gave me.’
Here at CelebMix, we had the opportunity to exclusively speak with Josh about his new single, his music video and more.
You recently released your track ‘Weight.’ What does the track represent to you?
”Weight’ represents a part of my life where I felt alone and without the support of my friends and those around me. I was struggling with my mental health and wanted to put my frustrations and energy into writing a song that expressed how I felt at the time.’
How did you come up with the concept for the music video?
‘The story itself was written by myself and my dear friends Ed Tyson and film-maker Sam Shaw. We wanted to create something that people struggling with issues similar to the theme of the song could connect with, something that represented the quiet struggles a lot of people have to deal with on a daily basis.’
Who are your musical influences?
‘My musical influences are broad, but if I had to name a few, it would be artists like Neil Young, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, as well as more contemporary artists like Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Beirut.’
What can be expected from you in the coming months music-wise?
”Weight’ is my third single so far and I have so many songs written and recorded, so my plan is to release those, maybe in the form of an EP in the early winter months.’
Finally, do you have a message for your supporters?
‘My message to those who have supported me is a massive thank you. I simply wouldn’t be able to do it without you all and I am forever grateful for that. I’m going to keep putting all of my energy into writing and releasing music for you. This is just the beginning.’
