We recently got the opportunity to speak to Leena Ojala; an upcoming London-based artist whose genre is a fusion of contemporary alternative, indie, soul and electronica who has just released her brand new single Mixed Messages which is out today!
After experimenting with her sound in London and Berlin Leena releases her debut EP called EPI alongside performing solo gigs and playing gigs as part of an acoustic duo. We seriously have to ask ourselves- what can’t Leena do?
How would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as contemporary, electronic, passionate and emotional.
What inspired you to become an artist?
When I was little I loved listening and imitating female artists with big vocals and emotional delivery. I would sing the songs in karaoke or at school events. When I started playing the guitar at 16, I started writing my own music. It was then that I thought that this is something I really love and could actually do.
What was the inspiration behind the name for your upcoming EP “My World”?
“My World” is about fighting the expectation that others put on you and wanting to do your own thing. This also applies to my music and my sound. I feel that this EP is the statement of where I am at the moment with my music.
You’re a full time musician, performer and songwriter do you find it hard to balance all areas of your craft?
At the moment I love writing, performing and producing. I think when you have passion for something it makes it easy to find time for it. As long as there’s motivation, there is time.
Tell us about “Mixed Messages” your new single!
Mixed Messages is about someone treating you like a princess one moment and then just ignoring you. For example, you get excited when someone really wants to meet up with you and then you just sit there watching them on their mobile phone.
What do you want to achieve with your music?
I want to write music that people can relate to and enjoy, and I want to be able to make a living as a musician.
What do you think is the most important thing that people should know about you?
I am an independent musician who writes, performs and produces her own music. My every song has a message.
What do you have planned right now for the future?
The main focus right now is my EP release which will be out on 24th November. I am also writing more music at the moment which I will be releasing in the new year but no time scales for that yet. One of my key targets for next year is to get out to the festival circuit.
