James McAvoy to Star in Colm McCarthy’s ‘Escape’

James McAvoy has been very busy lately, with his most recent film Split smashing box office ratings and a highly anticipated sequel already in the works.

He also has Atomic Blonde, starring Charlize Theron, coming out in August whilst Submergence is currently awaiting release.

Now he has another film lined up and it comes in the form of Escape, directed by Colm McCarthy.

Best known for his directional debut, The Girl With All The Gifts, this time McCarthy is making a tough, true life story.

Vanya Asher wrote the script, basing it upon his family’s experiences in Sarajevo where they lived until the country’s break up in 1992.

The story will follow a professor (James McAvoy) who is caught up in a battleground in Sarajevo after sacrificing his own safety to stay behind.

The professor is Asher’s father who stays to continue to teach, but as the massacre escalates, his window of opportunity to escape and get back to his family is quickly closing.

“Escape is the incredibly moving true story of Vanya’s father and how heroic it can be for a civilian to escape from conflict for the sake of his family.”

The themes are so powerfully universal – how humour can keep people sane through hardship, how a father’s promise to his son can be the strongest drive of all.”

I could not be more excited than to have James McAvoy join our team.” McCarthy reportedly told Deadline.

David S Goyer and Kevin Turen are producing the project.
