It is a happy day for the Bella Army and Cenation as long time loves Nikki Bella and John Cena finally got engaged. Last night, after their tag team match against The Miz and Maryse, the wrestler got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.
Nikki and John have been together since 2012. At that time, Cena was going through a divorce with then wife Elizabeth Huberdeau, whilst Nikki was on a break from WWE, alongside twin sister Brie Bella. The two have been public with their relationship since 2012 and have since appeared on E! shows Total Divas and Total Bellas, where John has repeatedly spoke about his hesitation to get engaged, due to fears from his previous marriage. Fans of wrestling will know that Nikki Bella wanted to settle down and have kids, but Cena didn’t.
Perhaps, it was this continuing display of resistance that has left fans of the couple so shocked and extremely excited for what is ahead.
Cena launched a powerful speech in reference to Nikki’s potential career-changing injury, last summer:
“This is what you wanted over a year ago.
You broke your neck and did everything you could to come back because you wanted a WrestleMania moment. I’m so very proud of you.
Right before your surgery, there would be a time when you would be a little loopy and I could ask you anything I wanted.
If you gave me an honest answer, you wouldn’t remember what you said. After a year and half, you asked me all the time.
I promised I would tell you when the time is right. The time is right.”
He said: “You were kinda glassy, in and out. At the last moment, I said, “Can you hear me?” You said, “Yes.” I said, “I only have one question.” You said, “What is it?”‘
‘Do you know one day I’m going to marry you? And you said, “Yes.”
‘I just need you to say yes one more time.”
As Wrestling Observer notes, this is the last big match for both Cena and Bella for the foreseeable future, as he’s going to “focus on Hollywood projects” and she’s taking time off for a neck injury.
Now that John and Nikki are officially engaged, it will only be a matter of time before they take a trip down the aisle. The couple joins the rest of the wrestling couples in the Bella family. Brie is married to Daniel Bryan and the twins’ mother, Kathy, is married to John Laurinaitis.
