Tony Marrero is a survivor from the shootings that occurred at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. He recently made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to explain that Katy Perry helped him through his recovery.
Tony revealed to Ellen that the lyrics from Katy’s song, “Rise” inspired him during his difficult time. Ellen then asked Tony if he would like to meet Katy, and before he could respond, the pop singer surprised everyone by appearing on the show.
The two hugged in an emotional embrace, as Ellen offered tissues to Katy.
Tony told Katy, “I just want to say thank you for everything you do. Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day that I was in the hospital all the way to now.”
The singer responded, “Life isn’t easy, and you need little reliefs, through songs, quite possibly. I’m happy to be a joy, I’m happy to be a light, and I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”
Katy then surprised Tony by offering to pay for his first year of film school.
