Earlier this week we took you down memory lane, reminding you of every Christmas number one single of the 21st Century. Now 2018’s chart-topper has been announced as YouTube star LadBaby with his track We Built This City.
If you don’t know who LadBaby is, let us fill you in. The YouTube star/dad blogger whose real name is Mark Hoyle enlisted the help of his wife Roxanne and their two sons to record a song about sausage rolls. Yes, you read that right. Sausage rolls! Recording Starship’s 1985 track this time as an ode to the festive favourite, proceeds from the single are going to food bank charity The Trussell Trust. 14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line and 4 million of these are children, 100% of the profits are going towards helping those in need.
Speaking of the achievement, LadBaby said “Thank you everybody in the UK who has got a sausage roll to the top. I can’t thank you enough not only for downloading the song but for raising money for such an incredible charity. I’m honestly speechless and lost for words. Thank you so much. YES MAAATE!”
We Built This City is the first novelty song in the 21st Century to hit the festive top spot, which is an achievement in itself and follows Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé’s duet of Perfect in 2017. It also beat Ava Max’s Sweet But Psycho who hit the top spot on the midweek chart, but slipped to second place as the week went on.
The Christmas charts have seen Mariah Carey’s classic All I Want For Christmas coming back in the Top 5 at number 4, with Wham! and Last Christmas in at number 7. Whilst over in the album charts The Greatest Showman hit the top spot after spending the whole of the year in the Top 5.
We can’t help but find this take on We Built This City wildly addictive and a great change to typical Christmas number ones. What do you think of Ladbaby? Tweet us @CelebMix and let us know!
