Ben thought he was at the convention to test out new games. He thought he was competing against another gamer called Callum. It was only when the screen drop to reveal Liam did the truth come out.
Needless to say, the nine-year-old was pretty surprised to see Liam on the other side of the screen. Ben is the recipient of Child of Courage award. At just eight years old, Ben saved his Mum’s life. His Mum had a seizure while driving her car at over 60 miles per hour, while Ben was a passenger, it was down to the skills that he learnt while gaming that Ben was not able to save only his Mum’s life but his own.
The seizure his mum had caused her to slump unconscious over the wheel causing the car to crash into the central reservation of a dual carriageway. Ben took off his seatbelt, grabbed the wheel and steered safely across the busy road, pulling up on a grass verge and putting the hazard lights on. His love of racing games taught him how to steer. He got out and asked another driver to help his mum, who made a full recovery.
The Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, is on ITV on Tuesday, November 5 at 8 pm.
