On July 9, 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda will end his run as Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton. Javier Muñoz will take over the role, starting on July 11. Since opening, Javier has been the alternate Alexander Hamilton, performing at the Sunday matinée. This will continue until July 3. Javier will then prepare to completely take over the role.
On July 13, 2015, Hamilton premiered in previews. On August 6, 2016, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Hamilton opened on Broadway, the same theatre Lin-Manuel made his Broadway debut. In 2008, Lin-Manuel played the lead in the musical In the Heights. In addition to playing the lead, the music and lyrics for In the Heights were written by Lin-Manuel.
Lin-Manuel wrote the book, music and lyrics for Hamilton. He got idea for Hamilton while in high school. Lin-Manuel was reminded of old-school rap battles while writing a paper about the 1804 duel between Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr.
Hamilton has seen many successes since opening. Most recently, Hamilton won 11 out of their 16 nominations at the 2016 Tony Awards. One of the categories won was Best Musical. Furthermore, many celebrities have praised Hamilton. President Obama and First Lady, Michelle called Hamilton the “best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.”
