Little Mix: A girl band sensation who are widely known for their infectious pop hits such as ‘Black Magic’ and ‘Love Me Like You’ have a side to them that only their fans are aware of. A side of them which is filled to the brim with burning passion and emotion.
Throughout their three albums, Little Mix have included tracks with deep meanings yet they are often sadly overlooked by the more upbeat and catchy radio hits that they have produced. Today, we will discuss said tracks so hang on — it’s going to be a long ride.
The band released their debut album ‘DNA’ back in 2012 and it gave us the singles such as their number one ‘Wings’ and their RnB collaboration with Missy Elliot, ‘How Ya’ Doin’?’ The most underrated single, ‘Change Your Life,’ is a song that set out to empower young people who look up to the band. The track emphasises the need for solidarity in a world where self-confidence is at an all time low and body image seems to be the most important attribute for teenagers worldwide.
Along with that track, ‘DNA’ divulges into darker roots as the track list progresses. ‘Case Closed’ is a bonus track on the aforementioned album and it seems to explore the difficult topic of domestic abuse. It is a vocal strong ballad with powerful lyrics which are unexpected from a band who are known for the high tempo pop tracks within their discography.
“Got your fingerprints as evidence all on my body.
Put your right hand on the book and you were found guilty.” — Little Mix, Case Closed.
In 2013, they released their follow up album ‘Salute’ which certainly wasn’t lacking the tracks to pull at your heart strings. ‘Little Me’ was the second official single from the album and is considered to be the ‘big sister’ track to ‘Change Your Life.’ The reflective lyrics hear the girls discuss what they would tell their younger selves if they could go back in time. The accompanying music video was shot in black and white, featuring actors discussing the struggles that they managed to overcome.
Also on this album, ‘These Four Walls’ is more than likely the most heartfelt track that Little Mix has produced. It’s not a simple love song about a break up, it is so much more than that. It is a song exploring the pain and experiences of bereavement. It is a complicated topic that the ladies portrayed amazingly well with their hauntingly beautiful harmonies that make the song so special.
“I’ve called a thousand times, if I hear your voice I’ll be fine.” — Little Mix, These Four Walls.
Little Mix are no stranger to emotional love ballads. Throughout their career, they have hit us with heartbreaking tracks such as ‘Good Enough’ (which is one of the fan favourites!) The song made it onto their setlist of their 2014 ‘Salute Tour’ and it never failed to make everyone tear up a little, even the band themselves!
It is about someone falling in love with another person who left her after they gave them all of their love. They grew stronger due to this heartbreak and they are seeking the confirmation that they are finally good enough for the person they once loved so much.
Other emotional love songs include ‘Towers,’ ‘I Love You’ and ‘Love Me or Leave Me.’ (Which totally deserves to be on the Get Weird Tour setlist, by the way!) However, the last one we will discuss today is ‘Secret Love Song,’ more specifically, ‘Secret Love Song Part II’ — the version of the track without the Jason Derulo feature.
The second part to this ballad is possibly one of the best songs ever written. No joke. Fans were quick to pick up upon the deeper meaning behind the lyrics which narrate the lives of many people within the LGBTQ+ community who struggle to accept their sexuality and are unable to show their love in public. This idea was even backed up by band member, Jade Thirlwall. See her response below.
