The video for ‘Lean On’ by Major Lazer, DJ Snake and MØ has surpassed two billion YouTube views.
In doing so, the collective join a very exclusive club of artists who have also reached the huge milestone. As it stands, nine videos (eight of which are music related) have exceeded two billion views, including Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’, which was the last video to reach this before ‘Lean On’.
Whilst ‘Lean On’ is the ninth video to reach two billion views, it is actually the fifth fastest video to do so. The video was released on March 22, 2015 and took 770 days to accumulate the views.
Directed by Tim Erem, the video for ‘Lean On’ was filmed in India and produced by Mikhail Mehra, Akshay Multani and Per Welen. Speaking about the video, Major Lazer’s Diplo said:
“When we toured there [in India] as Major Lazer, it was mind-blowing to see our fan-base and we wanted to incorporate the attitude and positive vibes into our video and just do something that embodies the essence of Major Lazer. Major Lazer has always been a culture mashup and to us, India feels like some kind of special creature with one foot in history and one firmly in the future.”
‘Lean On’ was a huge hit across the globe, reaching 2x Platinum status in the UK, 4x Platinum in the US, and 6x Platinum in Italy, Sweden and Australia. It also achieved numerous other certifications, and topped the charts in several countries. Up until October 2016, ‘Lean On’ was also the most streamed song of all time on Spotify.
