Vancouver, B.C.-based electronic musician Marc-E recently released his new single, “Before the Thought,” an immersive, psychedelic, downtempo track. Marc-E is presently putting the finishing touches on his upcoming long player, slated to drop in 2024.
Marc-E explains, “I wanted to create something with a much heavier sub-bass than my last few releases. Something that is sure to shake the subs. I believe I was successful. My music has always been a blend between psychedelia and spirituality. This track leans more to the psychedelic side.”
As a young man, Marc-E discovered his passion for music and live performances, followed by spending time on music projects, including contributions to multiple albums and multinational tours, followed by beginning to self-produce his own music.
In 2017, he released his debut album, Sub Ek, followed by 2021’s Catharsis, along with a series of singles, including “Nataraja (Lord of the Dance Mix),” “Seeds of Faith,” “Brahman,” “From the Pointless Forest,” and “Tides.”
Marc-E’s sound merges elements of psybient and psychill, along with hints of world music, nature samples, and organic drums, forging sui generis rhythms and soundscapes.
“Before the Thought” rolls out on deep, groaning tones atop a thumping beat that slowly accelerates as lysergic, drifting colors sparkle overhead. The rhythm takes on substance, adding and subtracting aspects to and from the cadence.
The juxtaposition of the chiming, percolating luminosity of the keyboards against the subterranean moaning imbues the tune with dual harmonic axes, giving the composition a mesmerizing lo-fi reductive feel, even as intricate intertwining layers enhance the song’s bewitching complexity.
At once potent and super-chill, with “Before the Thought,” Marc-E reveals the palpable, mysterious energy associated with cognitive activity.
