Fox recently released a statement confirming that Mariah Carey will appear on the third season of Empire.
Mariah will star as a popstar named Kitty. Her character comes to Empire to work with Jamal Lyon on a new song. Other stars will also appear in the upcoming season. They include French Montana, Taye Diggs, Sierra McClain and Birdman.
Mariah and Lee Daniels, the creator of the show, worked several times in the past, including the 2013 movie The Butler and in 2009, with Precious.
In May, Mariah appeared on What Happens Live and talked about the possibility of joining Empire. She states, “I like working with Lee on movie projects because he’s still a great director.” She adds that at the time, she felt that it “just wasn’t the right fit.” She didn’t agree with ideas of her possible character. However, now Mariah looks like she found the right character to play and thus, gave the show the green light!

This will certainly be a big year for Mariah! Just a few days ago, the trailer for Mariah’s new series, Mariah’s World debuted. The show is a documentary series that follows the Grammy-winning artist as she starts her first tour in over ten years. Fans can also get exclusive access to what happens behind-the-scenes as Mariah makes preparations for her wedding with James Packer.
The third season of Empire airs Wednesday, September 21, at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
