Mary Poppins returned to the Royal Albert Hall for the European premiere of Disney’s new film for the reimagined nanny that everybody loves. The night was filled with magic and everyone had a ‘spoonful of sugar’ added to their evenings.
CelebMix attended for a night to meet and interview some of the cast about the new film. All the cast were dressed to the nines for a spectacular evening, filled with song and dance as well as a sprinkle of magic!
At approximately 5:00pm the stars started walking along the blue carpet to speak about the film’s importance in today’s culture and how it felt starring with some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
When meeting with Lin-Manuel Miranda, we asked him about his experience playing the role of Jack, a street lamp lighter, who cycles around London making sure all lamps are lit. He told CelebMix: “I play a new characters in the film, that wasn’t in the first film, Emily Blunt was the best person to play Mary Poppins, you know everyday was a surreal dream come true.”
As the music and co-lyricists of the film, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman walked on the blue carpet and stopped by to talk about the up-beat and classical music that they created for the film. When asked about the process of recreating the magic from the first movie and transporting the audience through their music into Mary Poppins Returns, Marc Shaiman told CelebMix: “We never tried to copy the first movie, but its style is so much in our blood and in our heart and soul”. Scott Wittman added: “We had little Sherman brothers living inside of us.”
Scott told CelebMix that the songs were like a “Very fine tailored suit that Emily [Blunt], she was a very integral part of the collaboration. We would work with her weekly and try material on her, so she was like a third collaborator.”
The red (or blue) carpet guests included the majority of the cast, Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins), Ben Warshaw (Michael Banks), Emily Mortimer (Jane Banks), Meryl Streep (Topsy) and Colin Firth (Wilkins).
The main show-stoppers of the film, the kids, Pixie Davis, Joel Dawson and Nathanael Saleh, (who play Anabel, Georgie and John Banks) were also very adorable and stopped by to say hello. Pixie said: “it was so surreal, [to be in the film], The people made it magical, Lin is so lovely, Emily is amazing and everyone else is just the loveliest person. ”
