Melanie Martinez Drops Tag You’re It/Milk and Cookies Double Feature

Melanie Martinez has finally released a double feature music video for the songs Tag You’re It and Milk and Cookies, both from her debut album Cry Baby.

As usual, Melanie conceived the idea behind the music video and directed it herself! It adheres to a similar theme as the rest of her music videos, which can appear childlike on the surface, but contain deeper, more mature content if you pay closer attention. Melanie once again plays her character ‘Cry Baby’ that featured in previous videos as well.

The first song, Tag You’re It, is about stalking and kidnapping. It takes place after Pity Party, the previous song on the album, as we see Cry Baby throwing away the decorations used in the Pity Party video in a garbage can outside of the same house. We are then introduced to the villain of the story; a man wearing a wolf mask, presumably representing “the big bad wolf”. He stalks Cry Baby throughout the video, and eventually kidnaps her after he gives her drugged ice cream.

The music then transitions into Milk and Cookies, and Cry Baby is forced to make cookies for the wolf while he watches from an icy cave nearby. When he turns his back, Cry Baby slips some poison into the cookie batter and triumphs at her success in murdering him. This song is said to mark Cry Baby’s descent into the madness we see on the rest of the album.

Melanie has previously said she would love to have a visual accompaniment for every song on Cry Baby. Now, 10 out of 13 songs on the standard edition have a music video. The only three remaining songs are Mrs. Potato Head, Pacify Her, and Mad Hatter.

This is not the first time Melanie has created a double feature music video. In Novemeber 2015, she made a double feature for her songs Soap andTraining Wheels. It is an uncommon yet effective way to tell a story by using the visuals to connect two seemingly unrelated songs. Melanie is always up for trying something new when it comes to music videos, such as the Sing-a-Long style of the video for Alphabet Boy.
