Actress Naya Rivera is set to release her first book Sorry Not Sorry on September 13.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Rivera reveals that her memoir includes lighthearted and humorous subjects. However, she also discusses battling anorexia as a teen and an abortion she had while starring on ‘Glee’.

Rivera reveals that when she was a sophomore in high school she “avoided food at all costs.” Although she battled anorexia in her teenage years, the singer and actress didn’t realize how bad it was until she started writing about it last year.

“I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff. I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”

Naya Rivera also reveals in her memoir that she had an abortion while on ‘Glee’ in 2010. She had just broken up with Ryan Dorsey, whom she’s married to today, to focus on her acting career when she found out that she was pregnant with his child. The then 23-year-old decided to have an abortion during her day off from filming her show.

Rivera tells PEOPLE, “It was very scary to open up about everything. It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”

Today, Rivera is married to Ryan Dorsey and together they have an 11-month-old son, Josey. About her book, Rivera says, “I hope Josey will read it one day. I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face.”

Naya Rivera’s memoir Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up is available online and in bookstores on September 13.
