One of the quickest-rising alternative indie-pop-rock bands in the industry at the moment is New Friends, and riding on their recent success, the band has dropped their new single “Sad Sugar”. One of the most addicting indie-pop-rock songs we’ve heard all year, New Friends really are on top form. This acts as the follow-up to their debut studio EP titled “Camaro” which they dropped earlier this year.
New Friends, a talented band hailing from various parts of Southern Ontario, skyrocketed to viral fame with their debut track “Purple Candy”, amassing over 7.7 million streams and counting. Originally practically strangers, they joined forces during the pandemic, recording and releasing more captivating songs while scattered in their respective homes. Their breakthrough came with a life-changing victory in Slaight Music’s prestigious It’s Your Shot contest, granting them a $100,000 studio and promotion prize to craft their EP, “Camaro”. Collaborating with renowned producers like Brad Delson of Linkin Park and Steve Molella of Finger Eleven, they effortlessly fuse their diverse musical influences, resulting in a distinctive sound that intertwines nostalgia for the bands they cherished growing up, including Coldplay, Snow Patrol, and Foster The People. Comprising of lead singer Stefan Boulineau, guitarist Cole Wilson, keyboardist and lead writer Ayden Miller, bassist Conrad Galecki, and drummer Nico Elias, New Friends’ meteoric success has earned them L.A. management and a top booking agent, swiftly propelling them into the spotlight since their first electrifying show in November 2021. As they continue their thrilling journey, the discovery of new possibilities and musical horizons remains ever-present for this dynamic and talented ensemble.
Written by Ayden Miller, Conrad Galecki, Derek Hoffman, and Stefan Boulineau, whilst it has been produced by Derek Hoffman, “Sad Sugar” is a strong alternative indie-pop-rock track with incredible vocals, a charged-up instrument production, and relatable lyrics. Making an impact from the get-go, New Friends effortlessly showcase their ability to create fierce tracks that hit listeners right inside. Impressing with their instrument skills throughout, the entire band manages to shine in their own ways, with the vocals completely on fire, the keys adding rhythmic vibes throughout, the drums keeping hard-hitting beats from the outset, the guitar knocking it out of the park – with some epic instrumentals that really puts “Sad Sugar” on the indie music map, and the bass warping melodic energy from start to finish. New Friends may have debuted just last year, but “Sad Sugar” gives off the vibe that they have been together for over a decade. Catchy, fun, and unforgettable, “Sad Sugar” is an absolutely sublime indie-pop-rock track, and one that is sure to go off at any New Friends’ concert.
Talking about the track, New Friends said: “It’s a bold and exciting alternative indie pop track that’s about meeting someone that you know isn’t good for you, yet you can’t stop obsessing over them. During the session, we took a few trips to get fish and chips and the salt must’ve incited the sugar theme to balance our pallets. For this song, we really wanted to capture the energy of our live set and knew from the first demo that this song was going to be kick-ass live.”
