The award ceremony for the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year was held earlier this evening at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. One Direction member Niall Horan was at the event to present the Helen Rollason Award with Olympian Becky Adlington.
Horan arrived at the awards with professional golfer Rory McIlroy. The two have been friends for a while, and Horan joined McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am earlier this year. The two were interviewed on the red carpet, and Horan was asked how his sports year had been. He answered that he is two up in rounds against McIlory in golf, so it has obviously been a great year for him. We’re not quite sure if we believe that, but if it’s true, perhaps he should make a career change during One Direction’s break!
Horan also said that the red carpet event for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards was just as hectic as any other award shows he has attended, even though the shows were very different. This year’s ceremony took place in Northern Ireland for the very first time. This was obviously very exciting for the Irishman and he emphasized how happy he was to be there.
He seemed to be in good spirits and looked happy and relaxed. If this is how we are going to see him now that he is not as overworked as before, then that will make us very happy as well. We are beyond excited to see what he, and the rest of his band mates, have planned during their well-deserved break.
A big congratulations to Bailey Matthews who was the winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s Helen Rollason Award! You can see the other winners here.
