Nick Jonas’ forthcoming album Last Year Was Complicated already looks set to be a smash hit. Following the release of ‘Close’ and ‘Champagne Problems’, Nick rolled out the third track from the album today, an emotionally charged ballad called ‘Chainsaw’.

Taking to Twitter before ‘Chainsaw’ was released, Nick revealed that it was the “most personal” song he’d ever written and hoped that fans would resonate with the vulnerability that comes across in the song.

In a couple hours my most personal song I've ever written will be released. #chainsaw

Hopefully my vulnerability speaks to you. #Chainsaw

    I loved. It ended. I had regret. I wrote a song. #Chainsaw

‘Chainsaw’ is a powerful breakup song, where everything in the house reminds you of the person that you are no longer with. Nick’s solution to get over the breakup is by tearing the house apart and tearing up the memories made.

“Baby I’ll just take a chainsaw to the sofa
Where I held your body close for so long, so long,
I’m gonna break the fucking china
Cause it’s just one more reminder you’re gone, you’re gone”

Nick’s raw emotion is compelling and there is an evident sign of maturity throughout ‘Chainsaw’ and the other songs already released from Last Year Was Complicated. It is refreshing to see such vulnerability on show, and ‘Chainsaw’ proves that Nick is an incredibly talented singer songwriter.

Not content with just giving us the melodic ‘Chainsaw’, Nick has also shared the music video for the song. The video sees Nick wandering around in an empty house, reminiscing on all of the times he shared with a former girlfriend, portrayed by model Sara Sampaio. To get over the memories and pain his heartache has caused, Nick torches the house and watches it go up in flames.

Nick worked with director Luke Monaghan on the video and told Vogue that collaborating with him was “really special as this is an incredibly personal song and the performance in the video had to represent that.” Nick also described working with close friend Sara as “amazing”, not only because she’s one beautiful lady, but because her “acting skills were definitely on display in her performance.”

It seems that Last Year Was Complicated is set to be a major heartbreak album. It has been said in many interviews that the inspiration for ‘Chainsaw’ and the majority of his new album came from his split with Miss USA Olivia Culpo. In a recent interview with Out magazine, Nick said of the album: “It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the breakup. I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been in.”

‘Chainsaw’ is available as a download now when you pre-order Last Year Was Complicated. Watch the video below.
