One Direction Give Fans History as Both a Love Letter and A New Single

When Made In The A.M was released on November 13th, the album in it’s entirety was so good that it was hard for fans to pick out their immediate “stand out” songs.  Each track on the album means something different to Louis, Harry, Niall, Liam, and the fans too about their journey so far.

Songs like AM, What A Feeling, History, and Never Enough ended up being some of the most talked about tracks on the album as the weeks after it’s release went on and fans wondered excitedly if one of these tracks would be released as a single.  Earlier in December, One Direction announced that there would be a new single off of Made In The A.M – but the track would be Infinity.

There were mixed fan reactions. Infinity had been given to fans prior to the album’s actual release date which meant, even in it’s beauty, that it wasn’t something new and exciting to the fan base.  Infinity is lovely and it was understood why it would be released as a single; but as time drew closer to the last performance we’d get from One Direction in the foreseeable future – and they performed it live – fans began wondering why History wasn’t the song chosen to be a single.

Especially when Harry said this about the track.

History is a love letter between Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall and us.

If you were lucky enough to see One Direction perform History live, you’ll know it’s true that you could actually feel the emotion in the room from the boys on stage, and the fans watching, as they belted out lyrics that stood as a reminder, and a promise, that the future only looks bright if we’re all in this together; and that everything we’ve come to make it through this far has all been easier because we’ve had one another.

All of the rumours, all of the fights
But we always find a way to make it out alive
Thought we were going strong
Thought we were holding on
Aren’t we?

You and me got a whole lot of history
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history
So don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever

Minibars, expensive cars, hotel rooms, and new tattoos, good champagne, and private planes
But they don’t mean anything
Cause’ the truth is out, I realised that without you here life is just a lie
This is not the end
This is not the end
We can make it you know it, you know

From the moment fans heard History – it was destined to become a single.

After One Direction’s final performance on the X-Factor December 13th; Harry and Louis both took to twitter with emotional ‘Thank You’ messages for fans – both encompassing History in their tweets.

While fans are certainly still a bit sad about the break and not because Niall, Liam, Louis, and Harry don’t deserve the time off, but because it’s hard to imagine the lives of fans being as full without the light that the boys give off – it’s a nice gesture to wake up the morning after they sang History on the X-Factor with a beautiful montage of photos in the background and know it’s going to get the recognition it deserves.

It’s nice to see tweets from Harry and Louis that again, promise fans they’re coming back and thank fans for their work beside them.

It’s been a lovely journey so far hasn’t it lads; and this is just the beginning.

We can’t wait to see the reaction once History is officially released and we’re already imagining what a beautiful music video might accompany it.  One Direction made an amazing choice changing their single from Infinity to History; although both songs are absolutely beautiful – for right now, for this part of the journey – History just makes sense.

We love you too; Louis, Harry, Liam, and Niall – we’ll be here when you get back.
