One Direction fans are patiently, or anxiously, awaiting Friday the 13th and the release of Made In The A.M. Fans have also been dreading the very publicized hiatus that the boys of One Direction have technically already begun (sans a few performances scattered across November and December) and wondering what it all means to the future of the band. Louis, Niall, Harry, and Liam have promised fans that they’d return soon on twitter and in recent interviews; saying this is not where they watch the lights dim for the last time.
Another way they’ve provided fans with that promise and a sense of comfort also? The release of their track ‘History’.
While the entire song sounds like a promise to fans that the lads have no plan into ending their journey here, it’s also a promise to themselves and each other. It says that they’ve done it all, they’ve struggled and learnt about real life heart break and felt like they were losing their minds but that they know they could live forever – they could do this forever – as long as they’ve got each other.
“Mini bars, expensive cars, hotel rooms, and new tattoos and good champagne, and private planes. But we don’t need anything, ‘cuz the truth is out I realize, without you here life is just a lie. This is not the end, this is not the end, We can make it you know it, you know”
It’s been asked of Louis, Harry, Liam, and Niall that when Zayn left the band if there was ever a moment they thought about ending it there, walking away and saying they’d had a good run. While the question obviously hung in the air – the boys all had the same response – this is not the end. Upon Zayn’s departure the boys banded together stronger and realized that this is still their dream, this is still want they want their lives to look like – this still brings them joy just as it provides joy to their fans.
The lyrics to History follow that narrative.
You gotta help me,
I’m loosing my mind.
Keep getting the feeling
You wanna leave this all behind.
Thought we were going strong,
I thought we were holding on.
Aren’t we?
No, they don’t teach ya
This in school.
Now, my heart’s breaking,
And I don’t know what to do.
Thought we were going strong,
I thought we were holding on.
Aren’t we?
You and me got a whole lot of history.
We could be the greatest thing
That the world has ever seen.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
So don’t let it go;
We can make some more.
We can live forever.
All of the rumors,
all of the fights,
We always find a way to
Make it out alive.
Thought we were going strong,
I thought we were holding on.
Aren’t we?
You and me got a whole lot of history.
We could be the greatest thing
That the world has ever seen.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
So don’t let it go;
We can make some more.
We can live forever.
Mini bars, expensive cars,
Hotel rooms, and new tattoos,
Good champagne, private planes,
But we don’t need anything.
‘Cause the truth is out;
I realize that without you here
Life is just a lie.
This is not the end;
This is not the end.
We can make it;
You know it, you know.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
We could be the greatest thing
That the world has ever seen.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
So don’t let it go;
We can make some more.
We can live forever.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
We could be the greatest thing
That the world has ever seen.
You and me got a whole lot of history.
So don’t let it go;
We can make some more.
We can live forever.
So don’t let me go.
So don’t let me go.
We can live forever.
Baby, don’t you know.
Baby, don’t you know.
We can live forever.
History also serves to challenge the latest smear campaign that has done nothing but try to convince fans that they’ve caused an inevitable end to One Direction at the same time as releasing ‘exclusive’ stories that say Harry and Louis’ inability to deal with being in the same band has caused rifts too wide to ever mend. The campaign has taken personal digs at the fans, the boys, and anyone who’s ever supported, loved, and believed in them.
History is a slap in the face to anyone who writes or believes those lies.
The boys have chosen which songs to release to the public before their album officially comes out in 7 days. They’ve released Drag Me Down, Infinity, and Perfect followed by an EP containing a stripped version of their single Perfect’ a remix of Drag Me Down an unreleased track ‘Home’.
Home stood out as an anthem to fans about Louis and Harry but also about love overcoming anything.
History will stand as an anthem to fans about Niall, Liam, Louis, and Harry; how they’ve seen the best, the worst, and somehow through it all they’ve found comfort in one another and decided that it’s worth it.
They’ve decided that we’re worth it.
Liam, Louis, Harry, and Niall have spoken out about this being their favorite album; one they’ve put a lot of themselves into at the same time as drawing from their own favorite musicians and finding a balance of where they fit in the middle of all of it. This album has shown, in just a few songs, how much the boys have grown in their lyrics, vocals, and as young men who have experienced a journey most of us will never know and used that to write songs that will no doubt stick with fans for years to come.
Listen to History and let us know what you think about the promise they’re making to the fans and to themselves.
We hear you loud and clear lads and we promise too.
This is not the end, this is not the end.
