The Teen Choice Awards aired on July 31st and with such an incredible year in music, television, and film, fans were anxious to see who would take home the surfboard in each category.  One Direction fans anticipated this year’s Teen Choice Awards more than years past because of the song nominated in the Choice Group Song Category.

I was stumbling, looking in the dark
    With an empty heart
But you say you feel the same
    Could we ever be enough?
    Baby, we could be enough
It’s alright, calling out for somebody to hold tonight
when you’re lost I’ll find a way, I’ll be your light
you’ll never feel like you’re alone
I’ll make this feel like home

During a year that brought both incredible and hard to navigate experiences for Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall – their songwriting reflected a lot about the state of their hearts and minds through it all.  ‘Home’ was one of the songs, upon its release, that resonated deeply with fans of the band and the way Louis was so excited to let fans hear it proved how special it was to him too.  Louis, Liam, and friend/songwriter Jamie Scott wrote the song and while it means different things to different fans – as most good songs do – a widely accepted idea behind the meaning of the tune is being true to oneself, even if it’s scary.

One Direction fans credit Louis, Harry, Niall, and Liam for giving them not just incredible songs and tours, but confidence and a place to feel safe.  Part of this confidence and safety means that One Direction’s LGBTQ+ community has a rainbow filled place to be proud. ‘Home’ has been called a coming out song, one that fans have said allowed themselves to find the courage to speak out about their own sexualities to friends and family.

Home being nominated for an award meant something special to fans and they used their voice to make sure Niall, Liam, Louis, and Harry knew it.  In addition to Choice Song Group, One Direction earned nominations in Choice Male Hottie – Harry Styles, Choice Fandom, Choice Love Song, and Choice Music Group – five nominations in total and after the full list of winners was put online after the show aired, the results gave fans something they could, again, be proud of.

In each category the boys earned a nomination, they also took home the surfboard!  That’s right, 5 new awards have been added to their long list of career wins so far and it also reflects 5 more wins even while the boys are currently on hiatus.

While most fans believe ‘Home’ deserves many many more awards, it certainly was nice seeing it get its first nomination and win in one night.  It was also nice seeing fans come together to continue showing support while the boys are enjoying their well-deserved hiatus and taking on some incredible new projects!

We hope that Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall are just as proud as we are of yet another lovely moment on this incredible journey.  What a team.
