The boys of One Direction have definitely got a public image to uphold; but it doesn’t stop them from showing their love and support to fans in every way they can, and it sure doesn’t stop them from communicating with fans using ways that aren’t as common as most would expect – rainbow bondage bears anyone? However, one of the most incredible things the boys have given us lately has been their track released less than 24 hours ago simply titled ‘Home’.
Louis Tomlinson was up early posting two simple tweets that let fans know this song was something close to his heart.
I'll make this feel like homeeeee

Jamie Scott – a songwriter the boys were vocal about writing with earlier this year also took to Twitter to voice his excitement about the track.
Check out new @onedirection #Perfect EP, I wrote #HOME with @Louis_TomIinson AND @Real_Liam_Payne .

Immediately upon its release the song found itself burrowing into the hearts of fans who were awake at it’s initial release and speculation about the song began immediately – as the lads themselves have said recently in interviews – their songs are open for interpretation and everyone hearing it may have a different meaning for it; but to us this one seems universal.
“Making little conversation,
so long I’ve been waiting
to let go of myself and feel alive.
So many nights I thought it over,
told myself I kind of liked her
but there was something missing in her eyes.
I was stumbling, looking in the dark, with an empty heart.
But you say you feel the same, could we ever be enough?
Baby we could be enough.
And it’s alright – calling out for somebody to hold tonight.
When you’re lost I’ll find a way, I’ll be your light.
You’ll never feel like you’re alone, I’ll make this feel like home.
So hard that I couldn’t take it
wanna wake up and see your face
and remember how good it was being here last night.
Still high with a little feeling,
I see the smile that starts to creep in,
it was there, I saw it in your eyes.
I’ll make this feel like home.
Baby we could be enough.
And it’s alright – calling out for somebody to hold tonight.
When you’re lost I’ll find a way, I’ll be your light.
You’ll never feel like you’re alone, I’ll make this feel like home.”
This song seems to be about – coming out.
The song talks about wanting to feel alive, trying to find something in a person you should easily feel connected to. In the verse where Niall sings ‘told myself I kind of liked her but there was something missing in her eyes’; we’ve all seen someone right in front of us that we should have felt everything for, and just been unable to do so.
The the pre chorus kicks in with ‘I was stumbling, looking in the dark with an empty heart’. Quite a transition from where we were in verse one. We’re taken on a journey a little deeper into the meaning – after looking in the wrong places for love they feel lost, they don’t have solid ground to stand on, but then someone says they feel the same and immediately the hope is regained… ‘could we ever be enough? Baby we could be enough’
The chorus comes in beautifully and says ‘it’s alright calling out for somebody to hold tonight’.
It’s clear that the focus person is different because you don’t go from trying to see the fire in someones eyes to wanting to be their home. You can, however, try to see the fire in someone’s eyes at the same time that you know your heart belongs to someone else.
The second verses come in and it talks about longing, ‘wanna wake up and see your face and remember how good it was being here last night’
Louis follows up with ‘I see the smile that starts to creep in, it was there I saw it in your eyes’.
Suddenly something that wasn’t found in ‘her’ eyes, is found in the eyes of someone else.
The song ends strong with the chorus being repeated and the message being clear.
“I’ll make this feel like home.”
This is already becoming a song treasured to people in the LGBTQ community – it’s all over social media. The idea was in the head of many fans as soon as the track was released and it hasn’t slowed down yet.
Is this an anthem that makes people feel like there’s someone that can relate to them when they’ve tried to find love in one place but found it somewhere else?
Yes.
Is this an song that can help make people feel like it’s okay to love the person who’s become home to them?
Yes.
Is this a song that may help people come out, or help the people in their lives better understand them?
Yes.
The message of this song is so loud for a song that’s actually incredibly mellow and coming from the boys it means so much.
As of late many fans have talked about the comfort and safety they feel at One Direction concerts because of the boys. It’s mentioned at the shows that all love is celebrated with One Direction, rainbow flags are thrown to the stage and paraded around, and the crowd, thanks in large to Rainbow Direction, is bright and full of color.
Thank you Louis, Liam, and Jamie for writing such a beautiful song, a song that gives people hope, power, and strength to believe in love.
Thank you Harry, Niall, Liam, and Louis for singing it so beautifully and giving it to us even though it didn’t make the album.
Being here with you lot; it definitely feels like home, our own chaotic, messy, wouldn’t trade it for the world…home.
