It has just been announced, in the half time of the FA cup semi-final match, that Pearl Mackie will be taking over Jenna Coleman’s role as companion to the 12th Doctor.
The tenth series of Doctor Who, which will include new companion Pearl Mackie as ‘Bill’ and Peter Capaldi continuing as the Doctor, will start being filmed later this year. Although unfortunately, fans of the sci-fi series have a long wait as it is set to be aired in 2017.
Pearl Mackie is currently performing in the acclaimed West End in the production of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’. She has also acted in BBC programmes such as Doctors in the past, so should be quite familiar with working with the BBC by now (and, in fact, with Doctors!).
For some fans, the revelation came with little surprise as she recently followed past companions Freema Agyeman and Jenna Coleman on Twitter along with a sudden surge of bets at low odds on the actress in multiple betting shops around the UK.
Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald from series seven to nine of the show, asked to be written out due to her wanting to take on a role as Queen Victoria in an ITV series. She made her last appearance on the show in an episode named ‘Hell Bent’ on 5th December 2015.
Series 10 will also be head writer and producer Steven Moffat’s last series. His role will be taken up by Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall for series 11.
