Red Velvet Return With Sun-Soaked New Mini Album ‘Velvet Summer’

Red Velvet have made their long-awaited return as a full group with the release of ‘Velvet Summer’, a five-track mini album that sees the K-pop icons trading explosive seasonal anthems for a more refined, sun-soaked soundtrack.

Landing more than two years after 2024’s ‘Cosmic’, the project finds the quintet embracing a richer, more laid-back sonic palette. Across its five tracks, ‘Velvet Summer’ blends bossa nova, reggae, dance-pop, classical and acoustic influences, showcasing the versatility that has helped cement Red Velvet as one of K-pop’s most consistently inventive acts.

Leading the release is ‘Surfin’ Boy’, a breezy dance-pop track built around mellow bossa nova guitar, relaxed reggae rhythms and an understated house groove. The song’s dreamy harmonies evoke the feeling of drifting across the ocean at sunset, while JOY – continuing her evolution as a songwriter following her solo work – penned the lyrics for the track along with album cut ‘Hawaii’.

“The moment I heard the demo, I could already hear Red Velvet’s voices on it,” SEULGI said of the single. “The bossa nova genre felt so appealing. Our past summer songs were intense and full of energy, but this time we captured a more ‘velvety’ summer mood, like watching the sunset over a beach rather than standing under the midday sun.”

WENDY echoed that sentiment, describing the record as a reflection of a slower side of the season. “Summer has its hot, vibrant moments, but there are also days when you just want to do nothing and take it slow. This album captures that languid, mature summer sensibility.”

The release follows the group’s sold-out 2026 Red Velvet FAN-CON <A Day in Red & Velvet>, which took place from July 31st to August 2nd at Korea University’s Hwajeong Gymnasium in Seoul. Fans in attendance were treated to the live debut performances of ‘Surfin’ Boy’ and ‘Hula Hoop’ ahead of the album’s arrival.

With beloved hits including ‘Red Flavor’, ‘Power Up’, ‘Umpah Umpah’ and ‘Queendom’, Red Velvet have long dominated the soundtrack to K-pop summers. Rather than recreating the high-energy formula that made those songs fan favourites, ‘Velvet Summer’ opts for something more understated – a sophisticated collection that proves the group’s seasonal magic has only evolved with time.
