Ricky Martin continues to spread the seeds of Latin Pop around the world through his Spanish-language music. But, we can all assure that his influence on mainstream music in the late 90’s exploded and furthermore allowed the better acceptance of Latin artists and the Latin genre.
He is well known for his signature hit ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ which garnered four Grammy awards at the 2000 year ceremony and helped his album (Ricky Martin) sell over 22 million copies worldwide.
The English and Spanish variation throughout his best seller is widely regarded as the beginning and/or catalyst of the Latin pop worldwide explosion.
Latin artists like Shakira, Thalia and Paulina Rubio soon came along the road with a bountiful amount of success. Enrique Iglesias is also one of the premier frontiers to bring the beautiful Latin culture into the front position.
But apart from his outstanding musical achievements, Martin is also one of the biggest LGBT icons who after sharing to the world that he was gay, began intense philanthropic work. This resulted in a beautiful speech at the 22nd GLAAD Music Awards.
He’s also talked immensely about the hardship of LGBTQ+ individuals and has even given a speech at the UN homophobia conference where he emotionally explained his “fear of living”. His dedication to music and to the gay community is one to really admire. Ricky’s appreciation and push for equality and for equal rights has allowed many to live more comfortably and live without fear.
His two children Matteo and Valentino will certainly grow up and graciously follow in the footsteps of their father and perhaps as well continue the Latino pride and culture. They may even get his amazing singer prowess! We’ll see soon!
