Just weeks after being added to the 2019 Billboard Music Awards lineup, Sam Smith has announced that he is no longer able to perform due to medical concerns. His representatives shared the news today (4/24) by posting an official statement. The statement says that Smith’s medical specialists have advised him to cancel upcoming performances and instead focus on his health.
“We apologize for the disappointment for those affected, but the primary focus at this time needs to be on Sam’s recovery and health,” the statement reads.
According to E! Online, the news comes after Smith had to cut a few of his South African concerts short. He only made it 45 minutes in before he had to leave due to straining his voice.
While fans have been understanding of the news, they are upset that Normani can no longer perform as well, as confirmed by Billboard. Sam Smith and Normani were scheduled to perform their collaboration for “Dancing With a Stranger” live at the BBMAs on Wednesday, May 1st.
Since Normani has performed the song live by herself before, her fans have trended the hashtag, #LetNormaniPerform, in hopes that the singer will be able to take the stage alone, especially since she has been busy preparing for the upcoming performance.
Normani has yet to make a statement about the news.
