The Voice of Germany star Sandro has been announced by the Cypriot public broadcaster CyBC as the country’s representative for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest.
Alessandro Rütten, also known as Sandro is best known for his appearance on The Voice of Germany 2018. His performance of Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood” saw him sail through his blind audition and make it all the way to the sing-off round of the competition.
You can watch Sandro perform below:
We have yet to hear Sandro’s song for Eurovision, however, if Cyprus’ performances in the last couple of years are anything to go by, the song should be a hit! The song will be selected internally and released in due course.
Cyprus have never won the contest but came within touching distance in 2018 when Eleni Foureira and her song “Fuego” finished as runner up to winner Netta. They will be hoping to go one better this year and bring home their first-ever win. To do this, Sandro will need to beat the 40 countries and their representatives who will be competing. Announced so far are Blas Cantó for Spain, Hooverphonic for Belgium, and VICTORIA for Bulgaria. The remaining countries are expected to reveal their acts in the coming months.
The 2020 Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted at the Rotterdam Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands after Duncan Laurence won the 2019 contest with the song “Arcade”. The two Semi-Finals will take place on 12 May 2020 and 14 May 2020, with the Grand Final taking place on 16 May 2020. A total of 41 countries will compete in the contest.
