When Shawn Mendes purchased tickets to see his idol in concert, we bet he sure didn’t expect to be performing alongside the legendary John Mayer himself.
On Monday night, Mayer, who is currently on his Search For Everything world tour, took the stage at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. During an acoustic set, the singer-songwriter brought his prodigy out to perform a mash-up of Mendes’ latest hit “Mercy” and Mayer’s “In Your Atmosphere.” The duo switched off between verses from one another’s songs, harmonizing and strumming their guitars.
Mayer took to Instagram following the show, calling the collab “over the top good.” In the photo, Mendes can be seen smiling from ear to ear.
The 18-year-old has previously gushed over how much of an influence the “Daughters” hitmaker has been throughout the course of his musical journey. Mayer even provided mentorship for some of the tracks from his sophomore album Illuminate.
“I didn’t get to work with him. But, he listened to a bunch of the songs and gave great pieces of advice through the music and production and lyrics and stuff, especially on songs like ‘Three Empty Words’ and ‘Ruin’ and ‘Patience.’” Mendes told Rolling Stone last year. “It was great to have him listening through it all.”
Damn. John Mayer is the best. My job is the best. U guys are the best. What an insane night. ??
