After being teased with blurry pieces of artwork since the beginning of the week, fans can now rejoice – the latest from Shawn Mendes is finally here.
On Thursday at midnight, the 18-year-old released his new single “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” written by Mendes, Teddy Geiger, Scott Harris and Geoff Warburton. All three co-writers have previously contributed to the teen’s work, crafting chart-topping hits such as “Stitches” and “Treat You Better.”
“Holdin’ Me Back” is cutting-edge, highlighting Mendes’ spontaneous creative choices and developing artistry. The pop prodigy created the perfect track to contend with current radio play and follow-up his top 10 hit “Mercy.”
Furnished with a melodious chorus and raspy vocals, he croons the lyrics, “Oh I’ve been shaking/ I love it when you go crazy/ You take all of my inhibitions/ Baby, there’s nothing holdin’ me back.”
“The minute I wrote this song I knew I wanted to get it out before my tour started, to give fans something new and fresh in addition to everything from Illuminate,” Mendes shared in a statement to Billboard following the single’s announcement. “I can’t wait to perform it on the tour, and for everyone to hear it. It’s equal parts what is amazing about this album, and what I’m so excited for about the music I have coming up next.”
The “Life of the Party” singer embarks on his Illuminate world tour beginning April 27 in Glasgow, Scotland and will kick off the North American leg in Portland, Oregon on July 6.
