In early July, the band Snakehips announced that new music was coming via a tweet with a short video clip. When fans clicked on the clip they were met with a chill backbeat alongside the always incredible voice of Zayn Malik. Within days, “Cruel” became a major hit as it took over social media and top charts.
With a single that great, a music video was a sure follow-up and on August 9th, it debuted to an anxious fan base.
Much like “Pillowtalk” and “Like I Would”, “Cruel” plays on visual effects and hypnotizing colors as the video shows Zayn in a number of settings that always lead him back to the girl who makes sense in a world that’s overly cruel.
Back where we left off
Watch you take your dress off
I’ve been by myself remembering you
Your body hurts me
Loopin’ ’round like CCTV
In all this bitterness you stay so sweet
It’s such a cruel world
Savin’ all my love for you, girl
The song itself was relatable enough but with the video release, anyone who has ever found love in a world that makes it seem almost impossible, has likely felt a bit dizzy and turned upside down because of the emotion; and the video does a perfect job of portraying that.
This collaboration between Snakehips and Zayn has left fans wanting more and hopefully it’s just one of the many times they’ll work together; their creative flow, visual effects, and sound work absolutely perfectly together.
