Stop what you’re doing and pay attention to Sophie Beem: Beyoncé’s protégée and New York’s best kept secret.  After releasing her debut EP back in March, Beem has finally dropped her debut music video “Skyline”.

After teasing the video to her thousands of Twitter followers, Sophie Beem, 16, tweeted a link to her new music video. Let’s just say it was worth the wait.

Set in the city, Beem’s chants of “I ain’t even here right now” fit perfectly alongside shots of her standing outside with slightly glazed eyes, truly looking like she is in another world. Combine that with her and some friends hanging out at an arcade, taking part in a casual dance breakdown, while wearing a sequin crop top and fur coat, and you’ve got yourself a stunning music video fit for our favourite City Kid.

While some in the comments loved the teen’s first music video attempt, voicing their appreciation for the song as well as the visual it accompanies, others were much more critical. One comment went as far as to say “Seriously? This is terrible. Beyoncé could have done so much better…”

However other comments were quick to defend the 16 year old. “I see the potential in this girl, this is a bop. I feel bad [that] she’s going to be scrutinized more than the average up & comer just because she’s Beyoncé’s protégée, I see it happening in the comments already.”

It’s true. Beem will be held to a higher standard than many, because of her famous mentor, however Sophie Beem seems to know how to handle the pressure as she continues to carve her place in the music industry.

The teen comes from the Upper East Side of New York, where she started writing music to escape from a troublesome family life. In 2012, she tried out for the X Factor US but failed to reach the top 40, however Beem was picked up by Beyoncé in 2015 and is now signed to the Queen B’s Parkwood Entertainment. Speaking about her mentor to Tidal she said, “I have the most talented female artist in the music industry as my mentor and teacher, like, it could not get any better than that. I still pinch myself everyday!”

As well as being mentored by a musical legend, Beem has already managed to record a collaboration with hip-hop star Fetty Wap on I Got It.

As of right now Beem is touring, opening for Charlie Puth on his Nine Track Mind tour , and promoting her self titled EP which consists of tracks such as Girls Will Be Girls, I Got It, Nail Polish and Sleepless/ City Kid, as well as Skyline.
