The beloved pop princess has twirled her way back into the UK Top 5 for the first time in over a decade with her new LP ‘Perimenopop’. Landing at No. 5 on the Official Albums Chart, it’s her sixth record to crash the Top 10 and a triumphant reminder that Sophie has never lost her groove!
Featuring the singles ‘Freedom of the Night’, ‘Relentless Love’, ‘Vertigo’, ‘Taste’, ‘Dolce Vita’, and ‘Stay on Me’, the uplifting record presents as a celebratory soundtrack for mid-life happiness and sees Sophie return to big, bold pop — its vibrant sound, and tongue-in-cheek lyricism striking a chord with both fans and critics.
Commenting on the albums ethos and message, Sophie says: “I truly find it fun getting older. There is so much joy in knowing yourself better as you age, and that’s where you find my kind of pop.”
Serving as her first official release with Decca, ‘Perimenopop’ sees Sophie team up with collaborators old and new, including new musical partners like Nile Rodgers, Sigrid and MNEK and long-time studio confidantes such as Biff Stannard (Kylie Minogue, Spice Girls, JADE), Hannah Robinson (Annie, Ladyhawke) and Ed Harcourt. Lead single ‘Stay on Me’ was written with Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), Selena Gomez, Caroline Ailin (Charli XCX, Dua Lipa) and Julia Michaels (Sabrina Carpenter, Ed Sheeran) and is a “disco-propelled pop anthem” about a blissful long-term romance.
The timing of the records success couldn’t be sweeter. After ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ unexpectedly became one of 2024’s biggest viral comebacks thanks to black comedy thriller film Saltburn, Ellis-Bextor has leaned into her renewed cultural moment with an album that embraces both her disco roots and her current chapter in life. With its witty title, ‘Perimenopop’ mixes knowing humour with glitterball energy, proving Sophie’s knack for making pop music that’s as clever as it is fun.
