Stormzy is set to make his debut at the National Theatre in a groundbreaking collaboration with Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham.
This new production, part of Rubasingham’s inaugural season, will feature the ‘Vossi Bop’ rappers music and is scheduled to open in the National Theatre’s Dorfman space within the next two years.
While specific details about the production remain under wraps, Rubasingham has described it as a “cut-through show that goes beyond theatre”, emphasising its potential to resonate with diverse audiences. She expressed her determination in securing Stormzy’s involvement, spending “six to eight months doggedly pursuing” him and his team.

Stormzy, known for his impactful presence in the music industry, shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating: “I’ve always been drawn to theatre… it’s such a unique space where storytelling, music, and performance all come together in the most powerful way.” He added that after meeting with Rubasingham, they “properly hit it off,” and he’s excited to embark on this creative journey with her.
This collaboration is part of a broader initiative by Rubasingham to infuse the National Theatre with fresh perspectives and contemporary voices.
Her debut season also includes a modern adaptation of Euripides’ “Bacchae”, featuring elements of rap and verse, and a revival of “Hamlet” with Hiran Abeysekera, marking the first time a non-white actor will play the role on the National’s main stages.
