Sugarland have finally dropped the music video for “Babe” featuring Taylor Swift. The video was released via Sugarland’s YouTube channel. Earlier, the group released the static video for the single which amassed around 66M views and garnered a positive response from fans.
The music video depicts a 20th-century drama with a typical family plot (resonating with the Mad Men series), comprising of a couple and a third person but unlike a typical ending, the video ends on an empowering note. The narrative is made of three phases – ignorance, realization, and liberation. Role-playing as the “other woman”, Swift indulges in a romantic affair with the male protagonist but like the wife, she too is at the receiving end. Instead of enjoying a “fulfilling” relationship, both the female characters find themselves in a vulnerable position.
The end is quite interesting. Both the female characters end the video with the same line “This is the last time, I’ll ever call you babe” but their circumstances leave two different kinds of impact on the viewers. While Swift is left frustrated and angry at the floor, the wife initiates a new beginning for herself, leaving behind her past relationship and woe, both literally and metaphorically.
The song was originally written in 2013, the year following the release of “Red”. It’s no wonder why many listeners find its resonance with the album.
But even though the singer might have released it 5 years later, we have no reason to complain. Did you like the song as much as we did? Share your thoughts about the single via tweet @CelebMix.
