Last Thursday night Mexico City went crazy when great artists reunited for the 8th Telehit Awards.
This year the ceremony was carried out at Foro Sol, the second largest venue in Mexico City, with a capacity up to 55,000 people. Telehit is a Mexican television network that’s aired for over 22 years in more than 5 countries, it’s focused on music videos and music specials. The Telehit Awards is an annual ceremony that’s happened for eight years, all the tickets are given for free during Telehit transmissions.
Large queues lined up the day before the event outside the Foro Sol (Sun Forum in English), there were so many people that the doors had to be open five hours before the show instead of three, as originally planned.
Mexican Youtubers like Werevertumorro, “El Jiots” and Chilean Germán Garmendia were special guests, and at 7:00pm, the show started.
It was an award ceremony, but the real focus – as always – were the performances.
Mexican talents filled the night, Mario Bautista opened the ceremony, followed by boyband Urband5 – who accompanied their performance with beautiful pyrotechnics – as Jary did after them. There was a heart warming moment when pop group Reik went on stage to promote their new single and some old hits, and sibling duo Jesse & Joy charmed the audience right after with their emotional performance. Singer Paty Cantú made the whole venue sing with a medley of her greatest hits while electronic group The Wookies made everyone jump to their beats! Rock band DLD made everyone scream so loud we’re sure they hurt their throats.
It was painted to be a Latin American night, but the British were about to steal the show.
The moment everyone was waiting for: One Direction.
Almost 99% of the crowd (or even more) were waiting for the main act, the greatest boy band of all time, One Direction.
Happier than ever and full of energy, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne drove the whole venue crazy from the first moment they stepped on stage. The crowd (mostly in tears) sang along their latest singles, Drag Me Down and Perfect.
“Mexico you are absolutely lovely tonight” Payne said as they walked to Stage B to perform their classic Little Things, with Harry holding a Mexican flag to put it later on his microphone stand.
Two hosts walked on stage after that to give them their awards: “Most popular video”, “Boyband of the year” and “Most Popular Artist”. The boys also spoke a little of spanish for all their Latin American fans.
There is no doubt though that the best and most emotional moment of the night was yet to come. Nobody was expecting the surprise.
After sharing some more words in Spanish, they presented a song they never ever had performed before as the first chords of A.M. (from their new album “Made In The A.M.”) started playing.
The song was performed with so much feeling the whole venue broke out in tears. The fans broke down when Harry sang the lines “You know I’m always coming back to this place/you know I’m always gonna look for your face” while pointing to the ground and the fans. It was such a beautiful performance, it definitely deserves to be marked as the best parts of the whole show.
Right after, they performed their next single, Infinity, and the crowd was so loud Louis Tomlinson covered his ears many times wearing a sweet smile, as he did for the whole show.
Niall talked about how amazing it was to be back there, on their first stadium ever, where they performed two sold out nights in 2013. Their last song of the night, Story Of My Life, started playing as he walked over the stage with the Mexican flag on his hip.
The boys said their farewells one more time, promising to be back soon with huge smiles and a group bow, and they left the stage as Louis and Niall wore Mexican hats.
The great ending.
As if that wasn’t enough, only minutes later One Direction left, pop-punk band Simple Plan took the stage, giving feelings to all those 2000’s teenage hearts.
Starting with one of their first hits ever, Shut Up, they brought the energy back and made a huge throwback to 2004 and showing what they’re made of.
Some newest songs followed, Boom and I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed, giving a taste of what their upcoming album is gonna be. The Canadian rockstars promised to be back next year, and they played one last song, their 2011 hit Jet Lag.
There was still one act left, and for a grand closing, Fifth Harmony took control.
Due to personal reasons, Normani Kordei couldn’t fly to Mexico, so the girls presented as a four-piece group, but it didn’t stop them for giving their best. Starting with their newest single, I’m In Love With A Monster from the movie Hotel Transylvania 2. They followed that up with their song Sledgehammer. Worth It was the last song of the night, making the whole venue dance along.
