Winter finally came and it was nothing short of epic. The conclusion of the George R. Martin’s saga was based on 6 episodes. These all were movie-length long episode with so much going on in every scene of every episode.
However, this season was pretty different from its predecessors as long as the critical reception is taken into account. Not everyone was going to be happy about it. But the show who got so much love from fans and critics alike received major backlash from both. And now the HBO boss has finally responded to this backlash by saying that the notion of re-writing the final season was ‘never considered’.
The season
The final season of Game of thrones premiered on April 14, 2019 and concluded on May 19, 2019. The show was primarily divided into two parts; the first three episodes were focused on the ‘long night’ which means the war with the night king.
The second part was about what the show had been named after, the iron throne. The first two episodes were fairly received by the audience and the critics alike. Nothing epic happened in these episodes as they were just a build-up. The problem started with the third episode in which the living fought the dead. Arya Stark killing the most fearsome villain of the show was not well received by everyone. After 7 seasons of hype about the final showdown between Jon Snow and the night king, fans were left disappointed when Arya delivered the final blow.
It was expected
However, this mixed reception was somewhat expected by the show runners who told the media that the ending of the show will be ‘bittersweet’. They had warned he audience in advance that it will not be for everyone. And how true this turned out to be!
The season is the lowest-rated of the series on the website Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the first season to receive critics throughout social media and has been the centre of various memes.
Still, disappointment is one thing. The fans were so outraged that they started an online petition to re write the final season with more ‘competent writers’. It was as though they were accusing David Benioff and D. B. Weiss of being bad writers. Neither of them could prove himself a good essay writer in this scenario. This was quite ironic as the previous which were loved by the audience and the critics were also written by the same writers.
Despite the criticism
Nevertheless, the season was the most watched TV drama again this year as it has been since the time of its release. Not all people were satisfied with it but some loved the way things concluded. Despite the mixed critical reception, the season received 32 nominations at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, the most for a single season of television in history. The show will still remain as one of the best drama series ever produced.
