We’ve been waiting for this ever since The CW announced that it was going to go ahead with a Charmed reboot. The fans and the previous cast has been set against it, with campaigns to boycott the new series, but with the reveal of this extended first look, can we all eat our words and actually consider this to be a homage to the series we all know and love?
We have to admit, we’re enthralled seeing a similar storyline to the first ever episode of the first season of Charmed, “Something Wicca This Way Comes”; however there are some big differences, mainly that it’s set in the 21st century and that the eldest sister arrives at a later stage.
The new series will star Madeline Mantock (Casualty, The Tomorrow People, Into The Badlands) as the eldest sister, Macy Vaughn, who has the power of telekinesis; Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station, Be Kind Rewind) as the middle sister Melanie “Mel” Vera, who has the power to freeze time; and, Sarah Jeffery (Rogue, Descendants, Daphne & Velma) as the youngest sister Maggie Vera, who can hear people’s thoughts. Rupert Evans (Rogue, The Man In The High Castle) plays the sisters’ whitelighter, known as Harry Greenwood.
Most Charmed fans will notice that the sisters’ mother is actually a main part of the first episode as she is well and alive, that is until further on in the first clip trailer when she dies. The girls come into their powers without realising and they don’t quite understand what is going on.
The brand new reboot of the series is developed by Jennie Snyder Urman – who people may know as the developer of Jane The Virgin. The actresses who played the three sisters in the original TV series have all spoke strongly on how they do not approve of this reboot; Hollie Marie Combs has been the most outspoken about the show.
Whatever you think about the reboot, it’s going ahead regardless and it is an incredible opportunity for these three rising actresses to climb into the massive shoes that Hollie Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, and Rose McGowan left. All four – who played Piper, Prue, Phoebe, and Paige, respectively – are iconic to the Charmed brand and will never ever be forgotten or replaced. The original series will always remain in our hearts, but this new series may allow the younger generation to fall in love with the world of Charmed.

No official release dates have been confirmed yet, just that it is coming to The CW on Sundays in fall. There’s no word on what channels it will be broadcast internationally, but we’re guessing it’ll take some time before it is shown anywhere else.
