For fans of The Voice, this is one for you. Actually, just fans of music in general to be honest. As Brooke Stephenson, known for her time under the wing of Kelly Clarkson on the 17th season of The Voice, has come out swinging (with her incredible vocals), in the form of a debut seven-track EP.
Brooke Stephenson’s ‘Backbone’, capitalising on the promise of these stand-alone songs, showing an artist who is in her element singing rowdy party anthems, heartbroken ballads, and everything in between.
‘Backbone’ wastes no time in displaying Brooke’s self-proclaimed Americana. Working with producer John Spiker, she has created a cohesive sound that emphasizes her classic country roots while retaining an undeniable pop sensibility.
This is without a doubt, intimate and stripped-down work that shows the type of delicate musician Brooke is, highlighted by two songs: the slow burn piano ballad ‘The Medicine‘, and the soul-infused Cry To Me.
Above all, Brooke is a storyteller. Each one of these seven tracks is full of flawed characters celebrating their victories and searching for meaning in their losses. ‘Backbone’ is a self-assured debut from a talent who will indeed be releasing powerful music for years to come.
