As excitement and anticipation for the upcoming release his latest studio album Surrounded By Time continues to grow, Tom Jones this week shares with fans the fourth track to be lifted off of the record, an upbeat and super energetic cover of Cat Stevens’ classic 1970 hit, Pop Star!
The quirky and infectious track showcases an all together different style and sound compared to previous releases Talking Reality Television Blues, No Hole In MyHead and One More Cup Of Coffee – with it’s irrepressible beat and funky, retro piano sample adding a new, and unique musical flavour to what promises to be Jones’ most experimental record to date.
“To me, ‘Pop Star’ is all about the excitement I felt at the time of my first success, and I imagine that a great many bands and artists feel the same when things start to happen for them.” Sir Tom explains of the personal meaning behind recording the track. “To get your first TV records out there, to be on TV for the first time, to get your first important gigs, and to go to the bank with your first earnings… what could be better than that? This track contains all that fantastic energy and brings back great memories for me.”

Serving as the long-awaited follow up to 2015’s Long Lost Suitcase (the third in his trilogy of albums along with Praise & Blame and Spirit In The Room), Surrounded By Time looks set to be yet another international smash hit for Tom Jones – who in 2021, celebrates an incredible 58 years in showbusiness!
Set for release on April 23rd via EMI Records, the diverse sounding 12-track LP, co-produced by Ethan Johns and Mark Woodward, sees the It’s Not Unusual singer mark out “new territory with a sonic landscape of outstanding musicianship and a vocal delivery” as he re-records and re-imagines classic tracks by the likes of Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Michael Kiwanuka.
