    TV REVIEW: Rovers

New football sitcom Rovers is a severe let down as it premier’s first episode.

The Sky 1 comedy has been touted as the next big thing but after a lacklustre opening to the series it might not even get a second series.

The show based around a fictional football team and its long suffering supporters as they try to support their terrible team has all the ingredients to make it a hit but unfortunately its smutty and dated jokes make you want to switch off before the first advert break.

With The Royle Family actors Sue Johnston and Craig Cash leading the cast you would be expecting a lot of laughs but instead you are left wondering how its even made it onto TV.

Of course the writers are Craig’s good friends Joe Wilkinson and David Earl who also star in the show, so that could be why it got made.

    TV REVIEW: Rovers 2

They wrote the sitcom and sent it to Cash to read over and being their mate he offered to produce, direct and also star in the comedy. So it is a case of who you know not what you know once again.

It’s a shame that shows like this are getting put onto TV when there are lots of script writers out there who cannot get their decent shows onto our screens because actors are using their contacts in the business to get their scripts to the networks.

The Northern comedy tries its best to be a sitcom that people will fall in love with but it falls dramatically short.

    RATING: 2/5.

You can catch Rovers on Sky 1 every Tuesday night from 10pm.
