The Chordaes premiere the Mark Needham Remix of “Something New.” The song is from the band’s latest EP, entitled In Itinere, Latin for “during the journey.” The Needham Remix adds potent percussive elements to the tune.
Composed of Leo Sawikin (lead vocals, guitar), Ethan Glenn (drums), Nick McFly (vocals, bass), Dan Cobert (keyboards), and Kevin Foley (vocals, lead guitar), the band was originally formed by Sawikin and Glenn, and over the course of two years expanded to five members.
The band’s name – The Chordaes – refers to “the tendons in your heart that hold the valves to the muscles as it is expanding and contracting,” Sawikin explains. “Our name is a statement about the power of music in general, and about how we think. It’s about something that holds the delicate parts of you together.”
“Something New” opens with quavering keys and Sawikin’s tremulous tenor, and then transitions into an upbeat pop-rock tune full of luminous vocal harmonies. Skiffing guitars provide buoyant flavors, as the dynamic rhythm propels the melody forward vibrantly, riding on the throb of the bass and à la mode crispness of the drums.
Sawikin’s voice bubbles with sparkling energy enhanced by the clean, soaring Beach Boy-like backing vocal harmonies. The arrangement of the harmonies is deliciously superb, imbuing the music with breadth and gleaming colors. There’s a balanced radiance in the way the harmonies merge yet remain distinctive.
The video, directed by Joe Enright, blends images of the band performing on stage with clips of the five members strolling around a big city, taking in the sights and sounds, as well as visiting boutique shops, a dollar store, and messing around in a studio. The mood and feel of the video is effervescent and charming.
“Something New” thrums with lively energy, cogent harmonics, and gorgeous vocal harmonies. The Chordaes definitely have it going on!
